20/09/2007 - ftr to go on show to public in Swansea
The future of public travel will be in Swansea as part of a week-long event to encourage the public to play their part in tackling climate change.

First, the UK’s biggest bus operator, is bringing its ftr vehicle to Wind Street on Friday September 21st as part of the European Mobility Week 2007.

Members of the public are invited to come and meet representatives from First staff and City and County of Swansea to ask questions about the ftr service, which is earmarked for Swansea in Spring 2009. A range of promotional goods will be handed out at the event.

The distinctive, purple-coloured, vehicle (which is articulated, 18.7metres long and operates on biodiesel fuel) is a new mode of public travel that delivers the high quality of a tram with the flexibility of a bus. The project is managed by Swansea Metro, a partnership between City and County of Swansea and First which aims to bring a new public transport system to Swansea and funded by the Welsh Assembly Government and the European Objective One programme.

A First spokesman said: “This a great opportunity for the public to come along to see the ftr vehicle and to chat with staff about the potential benefits to Swansea residents and the city of Swansea as a whole.”

European Mobility Week is a European Union initiative that sees some 1,300 towns and cities from 40 countries worldwide take part in a week-long event which encourages environmentally friendly travel. The week culminates with In Town Without My Car Day (this year on Saturday 22nd September) a day where people are asked to leave their car at home and to travel by bus, bicycle or foot.

The First spokesman said: “The twin threat of congestion and climate change is one we are all currently facing and the In Town Without My Car Day is a good chance to make people think how they can play their part.”
